An additional step with "jin yi bu"

进一步 (jìnyībù), is an adverb meaning "further" or to "go a step forward." Usually it is used in formally written Chinese, though it can be spoken as well.

Structure

It is simply placed before the verb of the sentence.

Subj. + 进一步 + Verb

  • 我们 准备 进一步 扩大 中国 市场。Wǒmen zhǔnbèi jìnyībù kuòdà Zhōngguó shìchǎng.We are preparing to take the next step in expanding the Chinese market.
  • 这 件 事情 需要 进一步 调查。Zhè jiàn shìqíng xūyào jìnyībù diàochá.This incident requires further investigation.
  • 这 次 开会 的 内容 是 进一步 研究 这 个 项目。Zhè cì kāihuì de nèiróng shì jìnyībù yánjiū zhè gè xiàngmù.The content of this meeting is to further research this project.
  • 如果 你 要 在 中国 工作 你 最好 进一步 学 汉语。Rúguǒ nǐ yào zài Zhōngguó gōngzuò nǐ zuì hǎo jìnyībù xué Hànyǔ.If you are going to work in China, you had better further study Chinese.
  • 我们 在 一起 旅游 后 我们 的 友谊 有 了 进一步 的 发展。Wǒmen zài yīqǐ lǚyóu hòu wǒmen de yǒuyì yǒule jìnyībù de fāzhǎn.After traveling together, our friendship developed further.

  • 这 项 设计 完成 以后 ,他们 进一步 致力于 另 一 项 工程 的 设计 。Zhè xiàng shèjì wánchéng yǐhòu, tāmen yòu jìnyībù zhìlì yú lìng yī xiàng gōngchéng de shèjì.After this design was completed, they worked further on a different engineering design.
  • 我们 先 在 一 所 学校 进行 教学 改革 的 试点 , 进一步 推广 到 全市 的 中学 。Wǒmen xiān zài yī suǒ xuéxiào jìnxíng jiàoxué gǎigé de shìdiǎn, bìng jìnyībù tuīguǎng dào quánshì de zhōngxué.We first tested our education reform in one school, and then we further extended it to the rest of the city's middle schools.
  • 先 学好 第一 外语 , 进一步 学好 第二 外语 。Xiān xuéhǎo dì yī wàiyǔ, zài jìnyībù xuéhǎo dì èr wàiyǔ.First learn your first foreign language well, then you can take the next step and start a second foreign language.
  • 弄懂 这个 问题 之后 ,才 能 进一步 研究 其他 问题 。Nòng dǒng zhège wèntí zhīhòu, cáinéng jìnyībù yánjiū qítā wèntí.Only after you've figured out this problem can you go a bit further and research the other problems.
