Expressing "in this way" with "zheyang"

这样 (zhèyàng) is used at the beginning of a phrase to express "this way" or "in this way."

This use of 这样 corresponds to "in this way," another way of expressing "so that" or "thus."

⋯⋯ ，这样 + 会 / 才 ⋯⋯

You will often see 会 or 才 following 这样 to indicate "only in this way can or will something happen."

你要多鼓励学生，这样他们会更有自信。Nǐ yào duō gǔlì xuéshēng, zhèyàng tāmen huì gèng yǒu zìxìn.You need to encourage your students more. It will help them become more confident to do so.
父母应该多陪孩子，这样孩子会更快乐。Fùmǔ yīnggāi duō péi háizi, zhèyàng háizi huì gèng kuàilè.Parents should spend more time with their children, which will make the children happier.
你要多说，这样才能越来越流利。Nǐ yào duō shuō, zhèyàng cái néng yuèláiyuè liúlì.You need to speak more. Only in this way can you be more and more fluent.
让他自己来，这样他才能学会。Ràng tā zìjǐ lái, zhèyàng tā cái néng xuéhuì.Let him do it by himself. Only in this way can he learn.

This use of 这样 corresponds to "this way," as in if we do it this way, the 的话 giving the pattern more of an "if" flavor.

To make the "if" even more explicit, you can even add 如果是 before 这样.

A few examples:

这样的话，你还怕什么呢？Zhèyàng de huà, nǐ hái pà shénme ne?What are you afraid of in this case?
如果是这样 的话，麻烦就大了。Rúguǒ shì zhèyàng dehuà, nà máfan jiù dà le.If this is the case, I think we're going to have a big trouble.
