Expressing "would like to" with "xiang"

If you "would like to" express something "you would like to do", then 想 (xiǎng) is the verb for you.

想 sentence

Structure

The verb 想 (xiǎng) can be used to express "would like to". In this case it's an auxiliary verb. The structure is:

Subject + 想 + Verb + Object

Examples

  • I would like to go.
  • 啤酒。I would like to drink beer.
  • 家。He would like to return home.
  • 葡萄。He would like to eat grapes.
  • 咖啡 吗?Would you like to drink coffee?
  • 我 很 法国。I would really like to go to France.
  • 我 老婆 一 个 大 房子。My wife would like to buy a big apartment.
  • 饭。I don't want to eat meal.
  • 我。He wouldn't like to see me.
  • 车。I wouldn't like to buy a car.

Subject + 不 + 想 + Verb + Object

Examples

  • 不 想 I wouldn't like to go.
  • 不 想 啤酒。I wouldn't like to drink beer.
  • 不 想 家。He wouldn't like to return home.
  • 不 想 葡萄。He wouldn't like to eat grapes.
  • 不 想 咖啡 吗?wouldn't you like to drink coffee?
  • 不 想 法国。I wouldn't really like to go to France.
