In standard Mandarin, 会 is considered an auxiliary verb. For example, in the sentence 我会说中文, it is translated as “able to.” Another definition is “to be likely to,” used in either future tense such as, 今天会下雨吗?or the conditional, such as,如果下雨,我会带伞. But Taiwanese people use this 会 in a different way. Even though Taiwanese Mandarin also uses 会in the same way that Mainland Chinese speakers use it, there is another use of 会. Look at the below sentence.

会 in this context is equivalent to the English verb “to be.” However, it’s the adjective to follow 会 is usually negative. So you would never say 这会好吃吗?because most people like to eat delicious food. If you do say this, the speaker is usually expressing doubt. This usage of 会 can confuse native Chinese speakers as well as Chinese learners. Some could think that the 会 is referring to things in the future or conditional.
