进步 and 提高 are similar in the fact that both are verbs that mean to get better or to improve. As well, they both can be used in informal or formal situations. Yet, they have some differences. Foremost is that 进步 is used in informal situations, compared to 提高 which is used in more formal situations. Second, is how they are used, for example 进步 is used to describe to improve skill level and cannot be followed by an object, whereas 提高 is used to describe to improve in a wider variety of areas including position, degree, level, number, or quality and can be followed by an object. A final difference is only 进步 can be used as noun to show someone’s level of improvement.
