While 创造, 创作, and 发明 are all verbs and can be translated to mean “to create” or “to produce” something that didn’t exist before, usually these three words cannot be used interchangeably. 创造 is used to mean to produce or create in the broadest sense, for example something abstract (history, culture) or concrete (a world record, a miracle). 创作 is used to mean to produce or create an artistic work (a painting, a book, music). 发明 is used to mean to invent (a thing, a skill, a method). Another difference is that 商量 is used in informal situations, whereas 讨论 is more often used in formal situations. All three are usually used in informal situations. Finally, it is worth noting that 发明 can also be used as a noun, to mean “an invention”.
