家 and 家庭 are similar in the fact that both are nouns and that both mean “family”. 家 is used most often in informal situations versus 家庭 which is used more commonly in formal situations. While these two words sometimes can be used interchangeably, they do have subtle differences. First off, 家 is better translated as family or home, whereas 家庭 is better translated as household. Additionally, 家’s use is much wider than 家庭 as it can be combined with many other characters to make many new words, and it even can be used as measure word.
