目标 and 目的 are both nouns that mean “a goal” or “an objective”. Both are used in informal and formal settings. While they can often be used interchangeably with the same meaning, a key difference between these two is 目标 is a concrete “aim” or “target” in work or study to be accomplished in specific period of time, whereas 目的 is a abstract “purpose” or “motive” undertaken and to be carried out without specific time constraints. As well, 目的 is often used to mean “destination”.
