受 (shòu) means to receive or to obtain; added before a verb puts the verb in the passive.
Here are some examples:
- 张老师 很 受 学生 的 欢迎。
- 在 今天 的 中国 有钱人 很 受 尊重。
- 他 虽然 没有 受 到 过 教育,但是 知识 很 渊博。
受 can also be used with verbs of negative meaning, meaning "to suffer".
For example:
- 受了 老师 的 批评 之后,他 再 也 不 敢 迟到。
- 水灾 使 泰国 受 巨大 的 经济 损失。
