When used as a resultative complement, 住 (zhù) can meaning "to stop" or "tightly". It can also be used as a potential complement, meaing "able to".

住 as "to come to a halt"

For example:

  • 站住!放 下 武器, 举 起 手 来!
  • 我 意识 到 我 说 太 多 了,所以 马上 打住 了。
  • 快点 打 电话 让 维修工 过来 帮 我们 止住 漏水。
  • 山路 被 泥石流 堵住

住 as "firmly" or "tightly"

For example:

  • 你 必须 抓住 重点。
  • 长辈 给 你 传授 的 智慧 一定 要 记住

住 as a potential complement expressing ability

When used with 得 (or 不) 住 functions as a potential complement , and denotes that one's one's ability is up (or not) to the task in question:

Some examples:

  • 他 已经 连续 工作 了 二十四 个 小时,肯定 快 熬不住 了。
  • 忍不住 骂 他 一 顿。
  • 你 把 那么 多 书 放 在 书架 上 了,它 肯定 支撑不住 嘛。
