Expressing "in the name of" with "yi... de mingyi"

以 (yǐ) ... 名义 (míngyì) is used to represent someone or something. This grammar pattern expresses "in the name of..."

Structure

This structure is similar to the English "in the name of the..." as in "in the name of the people."

以 + Subj. + 名义

Examples

• 不要 以 我 的名义 给 公司 写信, 公司 会 找 我 麻烦的。 Bùyào yǐ wǒ de míngyì gěi gōngsī xiě xìn, gōngsī huì zhǎo wǒ máfan de. Don't write to the company in my name, they will give me trouble.
• 这个 人 是 个 诈骗犯, 所以 以 政府 的名义 起诉 了 他。 Zhè ge rén shì gè zhàpiàn fàn, suǒyǐ yǐ zhèngfǔ de míngyì qǐsù le tā.This person is a fraud and was sued in the name of the government.
• 以 保护 生命 的名义 去 屠杀 其他 种族的 人, 并 不是 道德的。 Yǐ bǎohù shēngmìng de míngyì qù túshā qítā zhǒngzú de rén, bìng bù shì dàodé de. It is morally wrong to kill people of other races in the name of protecting life.
• 多少 人 以 朋友 的名义, 爱着 一 个 人。Duōshǎo rén vyǐ péngyǒu de míngyì, àizhe yī gè rén.How many people love a person in the name of friends.
• 我们 以 学校 的名义向 政府 反映了 这件 事情。Wǒmen yǐ xuéxiào de míngyì xiàng zhèngfǔ fǎnyìngle zhè jiàn shìqing.In the name of the school, we have brought this matter to the attention of the government.
• 以 圣父、圣子 和 圣灵 的名义，阿门。Yǐ shèng fù, shèng zǐ hé shènglíng de míngyì, āmén.In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, amen.
• 记者 不得不 以 采访 的名义 进入 大厅。Jìzhě bùdébù yǐ cǎifǎng de míngyì jìnrù dàtīng.Journalists had to enter the hall in the name of the press.
• 不管 以 谁 的名义, 这件 事 都 不能 做。Bùguǎn yǐ shéi de míngyì, zhè jiàn shì dōu bù néng zuò.No matter in whose name this is done, it cannot be done.
• 如果 没有 借口，需要 以 什么 的名义 来 解雇 他 呢？Rúguǒ méiyǒu jièkǒu, xūyào yǐ shénme de míngyì lái jiěgù tā ne?If there is no excuse, in what name must he be dismissed?
• 既然 是 以 你 的名义打 的电话, 那 你 来 处理 这件 事情 吧。Jìrán shì yǐ nǐ de míngyì dǎ de diànhuà, nà nǐ lái chǔlǐ zhè jiàn shìqing ba.Since the call was made in your name, you'll handle this matter.
