When using 跟 (gēn) as a preposition, it is used the same way "with" is in English. The other subject can be any kind of noun, but is usually associated with joint-action "with" another person. It is often used with 一起.
Examples
- 昨天 晚上 我 跟 我 的 朋友 一起 吃 晚饭。I ate dinner with my friends last night.
- 你 跟 原来 一样,没有 任何 进步!You're the same as before. You haven't made any progress.
- 你 跟 他 一起 喝 啤酒 吗?Do you drink beer with him?
- 你 去 跟 他 道 个 歉 吧。Go apologize to him.
Note that 跟 is used often with separable verbs.
