Using "ye" and "dou" together

If you are trying to draw similarities amongst a group, you will want to pair two key words together. You will want to use 也 (yě) first followed by 都 (dōu) to express that a group of people have something in common.

Positive Pattern

Structure

If you're using 也 (yě) and 都 (dōu) in the same sentence, remember to put 也 (yě) first:

Subj. + 也都 + Verb / Adj.

Examples

  • 他们 也 都 是 法国 人。Tāmen yě dōu shì Fǎguó rén.They are also all French people.
  • 我们 也 都 喜欢 喝 啤酒。Wǒmen yě dōu xǐhuan hē píjiǔ.We all like to drink beer too.
  • 他 很 高 ,他 的 两 个 弟弟 也 都 跟 他 差不多 高 。He's tall. His little brothers and he are more or less the same height.
  • 老板 经常 加班,你们 也 都 加班 吗?Lǎobǎn jīngcháng jiābān, nǐmen yě dōu jiābān ma?The boss constantly works overtime, do you all also work overtime?
  • 这 家 店 的 面包 很 好吃 ,别 的 点心 也 都 不错 。Zhè jiā diàn de miànbāo hěn hǎochī , bié de diǎnxīn yě dōu bùcuò.This store's bread is very delicious, the other snacks are also not bad.

Negative Pattern

Structure

If you're using 不(bù) or 没(méi) with 也都 ( (yě dōu) in the same sentence, remember to put 不(bù) or 没(méi) after 也都 (yě dōu):

Subj. + 也都 + 不 / 没 + Verb

Subj. + 也都 + 不 + Adj.

Examples

  • 我们 也 都 没 吃饭 ,一起 去 吧 。Wǒmen yě dōu méi chīfàn, yīqǐ qù ba.We all haven't eaten. Let's go together.
  • 你们 也 都 没 去 过 美国 吗 ?Nǐmen yě dōu méi qù guo Měiguó?Have you all been to America too?
  • 他 的 父母 都 不 高 ,也 都 不 胖 。Tā de fùmǔ dōu bù gāo, yě dōu bù pàng.Neither of his parents are very tall or fat.
  • 他 没 时间 参加 我 的 生日 派对 ,你们 也 都 没时间 吗 ?Tā méi shíjiān cānjiā wǒ de shēngrì pàiduì, nǐmen yě dōu méi shíjiān ma?He didn't have time to come to my birthday party. Neither did you?
  • 我 对 瑜伽 不 感 兴趣 ,我的 朋友们 也 都 不 太 感 兴趣 。Wǒ duì yújiā bù gǎn xìngqù, wǒ de péngyou men yě dōu bù tài gǎn xìngqù.I'm not very interested in yoga. Neither are my friends.
