所 (suǒ) sentences, which are called 所字句 (suǒzìjù) in Chinese, are common in formal Chinese. Part of what makes them confusing is that the 所 frequently feels superfluous, and yet this pattern appears quite frequently.

What is a 所 sentence?

所 (suǒ) sentences are simply sentences which use the particle 所.

For the sake of clarity, take these sentences for example:

  • ExplanationPinyin suǒ .Translation.
  • ExplanationPinyin suǒ .Translation.
  • ExplanationPinyin suǒ .Translation.
  • ExplanationPinyin suǒ .Translation.
  • ExplanationPinyin suǒ .Translation.
