We've seen multiple ways to express "not only... but also..." 不但 can be followed by 而且 (ér qiě), 还 (hái), or 也 (yě). This structure expresses an equal degree of importance between the two scenarios and situations. However, 不但 followed by 更 (gèng) expresses a different degree of importance between the two situations mentioned. The situation following 更 (gèng) has a greater impact or degree of importance than the situation following 不但.

Examples

  • 老师不但教给我们知识,教会了我们做人的道理。 The teacher not only taught us knowledge but even more, about how to behave.
  • 不但喜欢你的性格,喜欢你笑的样子。 I not only like your character but also the way you laugh.
  • 现在撤资不但会对贸易造成危害,会对股市造成影响。 The divestment will not only harm trade but also will affect the stock market even more so.
