Expressing "in addition" with "lingwai"

另外 (lìng wài) can be used to express "in addition," often with 还 or 还 used in the following phrase.

• 希望 你 不要 再 迟到 了。另外，你 应该 穿 得 正式 一 点。Xīwàng nǐ bùyào zài chídào le. Lìngwài, nǐ yīnggāi chuān de zhèngshì yīdiǎn.I hope you won't be late again. In addition, you should also dress a little more formally.

Examples

• 今天 我 没 空 ，能 不 能 另外 安排 时间 ？Jīntiān wǒ méi kōng, néng bu néng lìngwài ānpái shíjiān?I don't have time today. Can you schedule it another time?
• 这些 钱 不 够 ，我 要 另外 再 借 一点 。Zhèxiē qián bù gòu, wǒ yào lìngwài zài jiè yīdiǎn.The money is not good enough. I need to borrow some more.
• 我 建议 你 另外 找 地方 ，这里 租金 太 贵 了。Wǒ jiànyì nǐ lìngwài zhǎo dìfang, zhège dìfang zūjīn tài guì le.I suggest you find another place. The rent is too expensive here today.
• 这里 是 VIP 室 ，要 另外 付费 才 能 用 。Zhèlǐ shì VIP shì, yào lìngwài fùfèi cái néng yòng.This is the VIP room. You will have to pay more in order to use it.
• 如果 学生 觉得 不 难 ，老师 可以 另外 加 一些 学习 内容 。Rúguǒ xuéshēng juéde bù nán, lǎoshī kěyǐ lìngwài jiā yīxiē xuéxí nèiróng.If the students don't find the lesson difficult, the teacher can add more learning materials.

Used as a Pronoun

When used as a pronoun, 另外 can also be used to denote "the other" and there is no need to add 的 after 另外.

• 我 有 两 个 手机 ，一 个 是 小米 ，另外 一 个 是 iPhone 。Wǒ yǒu liǎng gè shǒujī, yī gè shì Xiǎomǐ, lìngwài yī gè shì iPhone.I have two cell phones. One is Xiao Mi, and the other is iPhone.
• 她 有 两 套 房子 ，一 套 自己 住 ，另外 一 套 租 出去 了 。Tā yǒu liǎng tào fángzi, yī tào zìjǐ zhù, lìngwài yī tào zū chūqù le.She has two houses. She lives in one and rents out the other one.
• 我 买 了 三 张 票 ，一 张 是 我的 ，另外 两 张 是 给 朋友 的。Wǒ mǎi le sān zhāng piào, yī zhāng shì wǒ de, lìngwài liǎng zhāng shì gěi péngyou de.I bought three tickets. One is for myself, and the other two are for my friends.
• 这 几 本 书 我 今天 拿走 ，另外 几 本 下 次 再 拿 。Zhè jǐ běn shū wǒ jīntiān názǒu, lìngwài jǐ běn xià cì zài ná.I will take these books today. I can take the others next time.
• 跟 他 一起 去 的 另外 两 个 人 已经 死 了 。Gēn tā yīqǐ qù de lìngwài liǎng gè rén yǐjīng sǐ le.The other two people who went with him already died.
