Expressing "would like to" with "xiang"

If you "would like to" express something "you would like to do", then 想 (xiǎng) is the verb for you.

想 sentence

Structure

The verb 想 (xiǎng) can be used to express "would like to". In this case it's an auxiliary verb. The structure is:

Subject + 想 + Verb + Object

Examples

  • xiǎng . I would like to go.
  • 啤酒 。 xiǎng píjiǔ. I would like to drink beer.
  • 家 。 xiǎng huí jiā. He would like to return home.
  • 葡萄 。 xiǎng chī pútao. He would like to eat grapes.
  • 咖啡 吗 ? xiǎng kāfēi ma? Would you like to drink coffee?
  • 我 很 法国 。 Wǒ hěn xiǎng Fǎguó. I would really like to go to France.
  • 我 老婆 一 个 大 房子 。 Wǒ lǎopó xiǎng mǎi yī gè dà fángzi. My wife would like to buy a big apartment.
  • 饭 。 xiǎng chī fàn. I don't want to eat meal.
  • 我 。 xiǎng jiàn wǒ. He wouldn't like to see me.
  • 车 。 xiǎng mǎi chē. I wouldn't like to buy a car.

Negating 想 sentence

Structure

Subject + 不 + 想 + Verb + Object

Examples

  • 不 想 bù xiǎng . I wouldn't like to go.
  • 不 想 啤酒 。 bù xiǎng píjiǔ. I wouldn't like to drink beer.
  • 不 想 家 。 bù xiǎng huí jiā. He wouldn't like to return home.
  • 不 想 葡萄 。 bù xiǎng chī pútao. He wouldn't like to eat grapes.
  • 不 想 咖啡 吗 ? bù xiǎng kāfēi ma? wouldn't you like to drink coffee?
  • 不 想 法国 。 bù xiǎng Fǎguó. I wouldn't really like to go to France.
